Instructor/Assistant Professor of Communication (Education)
Perform a minimum workload of 24 total credits per academic year
Teach a broad range of communication courses, including fundamentals of communication and journalism/mass communication classes
Exhibit pedagogical practices consistent with the Division of Humanities program-level student learning objectives
Maintain currency with relevant research within the Communication Arts discipline, particularly in the field of journalism/mass communication, and make periodic efforts towards academic publishing and/or appropriate publishing in the field
Attend division-sponsored events, including events not directly related to assigned workload, and occasional evening events, averaging eight hours per semester
Comply with University guidelines regarding faculty duties and requirements, including office hours, committee work, recruitment, and participation in academic events
Set an example of Christian lifestyle for all constituents
Coordinate activities with SBU Infuse, SBU's communications student organization, including but not limited to overseeing podcasts and the digital magazine produced by Infuse
Provide direction for SBU's Speaking Bearcats, including coaching the Speaking Bearcats, organizing and arranging travel for tournaments, and organizing and administering the annual Derryberry Invitational
Demonstrate a commitment and adherence to the SBU Principles and Expectations
Agree to teach nothing contrary to Baptist Faith and Message 2000
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
D. degree in journalism/mass communication or comparable field (required for Assistant Professor rank); Master's degree in journalism/mass communication or comparable field (required for Instructor rank)
Previous experience in digital mass communication preferred
Ability to teach a broad range of classes, such as classes in digital video journalism, media and society, writing and editing for multi-media, journalism law and ethics, etc.
Experience with both digital and print texts in a variety of journalistic/mass communication mediums preferred
Demonstrated ability to teach and model professionalism and collegiality in all aspects of content, communication, and collaboration
Professing Christian with an active commitment to the local church and the University's evangelical Christian mission
Commitment to active research/performance, according to specialty, preferred
