The Quality Assurance Intern will gain advanced, hands-on experience in food safety, quality assurance, and technical specification development within a high-volume frozen vegetable processing facility under the iconic Green Giant brand. Interns will assist in creating, updating, and maintaining product specifications for raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods, ensuring compliance with HACCP and GMP standards.
Essential Duties: List eight to ten of the most important duties using concise and cohesive statements. List the duties in order of importance and provide percentage of time. If less than 5% and not a critical duties exclude or list as ‘other duties'.
Conducting inbound quality inspections for raw and frozen produce, reviewing lab sample evaluations, and analyzing product performance data to ensure consistency and adherence to food safety standards. Interns will collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to apply food safety regulations, quality control methodologies, and product development processes.
This role is ideal for students pursuing careers in Quality Assurance, Food Safety, Food Science, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Business, or related fields. It provides a deep dive into the technical aspects of food manufacturing, R&D, regulatory compliance, and the integration of domestic and international agriculture within the frozen food industry, offering a strong foundation for future roles.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Specification Creation and Updates: Update, revise, and create product specifications for raw materials, WIP, and finished goods. Ensure all product specifications are accurate and meet regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, USDA, GMPs). Work with cross-functional teams to verify that specifications are complete and up to date.
2. Raw Materials, WIP, and Finished Goods Evaluation: Assist in evaluating raw materials, WIP, and finished goods to ensure compliance with internal specifications and food safety standards. Perform sensory, physical, and quality checks to document and report any issues found.
3. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain clear and organized records of all evaluations, lab results, and product specifications. Create and update reports summarizing findings, test results, and updates to specifications. Help with creating documentation for food safety and quality assurance activities.
4. Support in Food Safety & Compliance: Assist in food safety documentation and ensure products are in compliance with relevant regulations. Participate in internal audits, inspections, and food safety initiatives as needed. Contribute to identifying and resolving food safety or quality concerns.
5. Collaboration Across Teams: Work closely with various teams, including Production, R&D, and Purchasing, to ensure smooth coordination of specification updates and product evaluations. Provide support for cross-functional projects focusing on food safety, quality improvement, and product specifications.
Education & Experience / Skills & Abilities: List the minimum level of education and experience required to perform this job. Minimum Education Required:
Currently pursuing a 4-year degree in Food Science, Ag Business, Ag Education, Ag Science, Food Safety, or related field.
Skills & Abilities:
· Self-motivated and eager to learn.
· Able to work independently and as part of a team.
· Strong organizational skills and ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
-Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
· Good written and verbal communication skills.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications, notably Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands: Standard office environment, Percentage of required travel, physical demands (ability to lift, climb, stand etc.)
· Physical effort required (ability to move 30 lbs. from one area to another).
· Exposure to extreme heat and cold environments.
· Exposure to sanitizing and cleaning chemicals.
